DAY 1 - The Rocky Road to Dublin

Well, that was definitely a Paddy's Day to remember! After arriving at the hotel, we were tempted to fall asleep immediately instead of going out—but we were resigned to get a pint of Guinness and enjoy the local festivities for at least the duration of the pint. We got dressed, put on our walking shoes, and hit the road to find Temple Bar, one of Dublin's most renowned pubs.

Temple Bar wasn't all that hard to find, and every pub we passed along the way had an excessive amount of inebriated foreigners covered in green, orange, and white—as if they were all actually from Ireland. The bouncer in front of the bar had a rough job of keeping the queue in order, no thanks to the live music being played on the opposite side of the street, but the bartenders had the worst job of the evening! With hardly any walking space, JJ edged her way to the bar (did you get it? Bad joke #1) and ordered our pints, which were quite frothy when we received them. In a search for a bit of standing space, we threw a few elbows and found the patio, which we didn't realise was a smoking patio...but whatevs.

After taking a picture of our pints next to a Temple Bar sign, a man next to us turned around and said, “You're not from here, are you?” Nope! Garrett, as this man turned out to be called, and his friend Ronan ended up talking with JJ and I for the entire evening. I'm not sure how we managed to find the only two Irish people in that bar, but we can definitely conclude that last night was a success. A few of the highlights include:

“OOOOOOOHHHH I LOOOOOVE Greek and Roman history!”--NOT said by JJ.

A lecture on the proper terminology to use for Paddy's Day. It is not St. Patrick's Day, and 'never' Patty's. Or St. Paddy's. Just Paddy's.

“I think my hair is longer than yours.”

Katie getting Guinness spilled down her arm.

Katie getting Guinness spilled down her shirt.

Katie getting an entire pint sloshed on her whilst walking past a very drunk individual who knocked it over.

Katie doing laundry in the hotel sink and drying everything on the heated towel rack (which JJ burned herself on earlier in the evening).

JJ challenging Ronan to use his Irish pick up lines on unsuspecting Americans. Apparently there are no Irish pick up lines, so “kiss me I'm Irish” was the key phrase.

A man from Syracuse (NY). Enough said.

The proposal: Katie being engaged within a mere hours of leaving Will in a different country,

The concurrent explanation of the engagement ring: an Irish history ring, including symbols that represent William of Orange and the Union Jack...riiiiiight.

Various loud cheers from numerous broken glasses.

A heated debate about who is better: Eminem or Jay-Z. Jay-Z, according to Ronan, is the BEST rapper in the world, and liking Eminem is racist. Hmm.

A later discussion about Nickie Manaj, in which the 'Cuse guy entered the scene. And we then excused him from the scene. After he spilled Katie's Guinness on her.

Using elbows to maintain standing space. Apparently slightly-sober Irish men walking past do not appreciate Katie's methods of crowd control as much as the other minions she pushed away.

JJ headbutting an over friendly bypasser on the way back to the hotel.

I think that about summarises the evening! We are currently lying in our comfy (but not as clean as a luxury hotel should be) bed, waiting for the clothes hung on the window to stop smelling of smoke. Gross. I'm pretty sure hotel management would not appreciate out airing out rack... but I think it's pretty great!
